SCRIPT International Student Scholarships

The SCRIPT/AHRC Research Centre for Studies in Intellectual Property and Technology Law offers two International Student Scholarships for students wishing to pursue one of the following programmes:

  • LLM Innovation, Technology and the Law (Distance Learning)
  • LLM Medical Law and Ethics (Distance Learning)
  • LLM Intellectual Property Law (Distance Learning)
  • LLM Information Technology Law (Distance Learning)

Awards will be based on a short paper (up to 1500 words including footnotes) on following topic:

"Critically assess an example of how technological innovation (eg. in medicine, IT, intellectual property, forensics) impacts on the law, and vice versa."

Your paper must be your own original work, and you should not have used it in any other context. It will be judged on its academic merit. At least two members of the academic staff will assess the paper independently (double blind), and in case of dispute will refer the paper to a third member/party.

The first award is open to applicants from around the world. The second award is open specifically to assist students from developing countries. A International Student Scholarships developing country shall be considered any country classified as a low income economy by the World Bank.

International Student Scholarships Applications for the scholarship must be submitted to Clare Neilson at escript.support@ed.ac.uk by Friday 29th July 2011.

Please use the coversheet provided (DOC). To be considered for the award, you must have completed the application process, and have been made an offer of a place on one of the distance learning LLMs, prior to the deadline for submission. Please download the attached coversheet to submit with your paper.

Award Process: The two students who are selected will have the scholarship amount of 3,000 GBP deducted from their fees during the registration process if they are full-time. Students who are part-time starting in September 2010 over 2 years will have 1,500 GBP deducted from both year one and year two fees. Students who are part-time starting in September 2010 over 3 years will have 1,000 GBP deducted from each year's fees.

Successful applicants should be aware that they must have commenced their programme of study within 12 months of the academic year for which it was initially awarded.

PhD International Student Scholarship Position in High-dimensional Data Analysis

The International Student Scholarship Biostatistics group at the VU University Medical Center has a very active group of statisticians working on high-dimensional data analysis. The group within the Department of Epidemiology & Biostatistics has close links to the Mathematics and Statistics Department of the VU University Amsterdam, as well as to both the Microarray Facility and the Department of Pathology of the VU University Medical Center.

The International Student Scholarship aim of this research is the identification of potential therapeutic targets and molecular markers for population-based screening programs. Further information about the research available at http://www.vumc.com/afdelingen/pathology.

The International Student Scholarship project aims to produce multivariate statistical models that describe the development of HPV-induced cervical cancer in vitro from a longitudinal experiment in which multiple molecular levels (DNA copy number, methylation, gene expression, and microRNA expression) of consecutive stages of a cell line model have been characterized in high-throughput fashion. The high-dimensionality of the information on and the dependency between the molecular levels make the inference of the molecular mechanisms underlying cervical cancer development a statistical challenge, which is to be tackled within this project.

The project is a collaboration between the Department of Epidemiology & Biostatistics and the Unit Molecular Pathology, providing an optimal statistical and biological framework.

Requirements

  • MSc in Statistics, Bioinformatics or a closely related discipline,
  • Good communication skills and flexible to work both with statisticians and biomedical researchers,
  • Good statistical knowledge enabling the development of new models and analysis tools, programming skills, the ability to explain complex ideas to biologists/non-specialists and an affinity with genetics and biology are essentials,
  • Previous knowledge of any of the areas involved in the project (such as longitudinal models, multivariate statistics, high-dimensional data analysis) and of R programming are an advantage.

Work conditions

The temporary employment will be for a period of 4 years. Salary and terms of employment will be in accordance with the CAO-Universtair medische centra of the Netherlands. The PhD International Student Scholarship student will participate in the PhD program of the VU Institute for Cancer and Immunology (V-ICI).
